Bill Howey’s teaching career started in 1980 when Milton Katselas invited Bill to run The Beverly Hills Playhouse. Milton and Bill met when Bill was assistant director to Milton on the play, The Trail of A. Lincoln starring Henry Fonda and Billy Dee Williams. A friendship was formed. Bill Howey became Milton’s Executive Director of The Beverly Hills Playhouse. After two years running the school Milton asked Bill to teach one of his classes. Bill ended up teaching three classes each meeting twice a week.

Bill’s job was to teach new actors until they were ready to move to one of Milton’s advance classes.

One of Milton’s students, Miguel Ferrer, (RIP 01/19/17) recommended his cousin, George Clooney, from Kentucky, to study at The Beverly Hills Playhouse. A young 22-year-old George Clooney went into Bill Howey’s class in 1983. At the time George was just one of Bill’s many students who received Bill’s inspiring, challenging, passionate and encouraging lessons. Who would know he would rise to such success.

After three years with Bill Howey George Clooney moved on to Milton’s class as so many of Bill’s students did. George wrote a letter to Bill and this is it:

Bill Howey left The Beverly Hills Playhouse October 1985 to go on a sailing adventure with his wife, Carla and his son, Steve. The sailing trip lasted a year. Bill decided to start his own acting classes called The Bill Howey Acting Workshop and has been teaching actors ever since.

Below are some photos of the going away party Bill’s students threw for Bill and Carla:
