Carla

Abbey Markham

I have become 10 times the actress I was when I started doing Carla’s workshop. The learning environment was nurturing and encouraging which really helped with embodying what I was being taught. One thing that I really loved about Carla’s teaching was that she is totally honest, she tells you what you need to hear to improve. Carla is very easy to understand as well as engaging. I felt that she really tried and succeeded to make sure that everybody in the class was given equal attention and got the chance to preform and receive feedback. I loved that she videotaped us. I know it really helped me get used to being in front of a camera and I felt prepared for auditions where they have taped me.

The most profound thing that Carla taught me was that you should never feel comfortable. I find that this statement is absolutely true because that discomfort motivates me to continue growing as both a person and actor. She taught me that the difference between good actors and great actors is that great actors don’t only show an emotion well, they have layers of emotions that come through and touch people’s hearts. Every script I’ve learned, and will learn I will apply what she has taught me, such as not indicating, and creating an inner monologue so that the emotional layers evolve. Carla has enriched my ways of acting. I only wish that the class had been longer so I could have learned more. I am definitely going to be in her next class.

Thank you so much, for everything. I have learned so many things in this class that I will always take with me. You taught me the truth in acting and how difficult this business really is. In every class you not only made us feel comfortable with one another but you also gave us the opportunity to go on stage and show who we really are. You are the only person I have ever met, who took me out of my comfort zone, and I mean that in the best way possible. I had never felt so nervous in my entire life when you videotaped the scenes and I thank you so much that.  You were extremely easy to understand and taught us the importance of subtext and scripts. What I liked most about your workshop was your ability to critique us in every way possible and to help us improve in our craft. Thank you.

I really enjoyed Mrs. Howey’s 5 week workshop. I am very pleased with how much Mrs. Howey worked with each student one-on-one. I especially enjoyed learning what to do in any audition. I loved her acting techniques and that she videotaped our scenes so that we can see what the casting directors are seeing. She was very patient and caring with every student. Also, I loved that she had her son, Steve Howey, talk to the class on the last day of the workshop. Overall I learned a lot and now have a new passion for acting.

Bill has encouraged me to explore.  In his class I have the opportunity to work a scene several different ways and learn from my successes and my failures.  Bill knows how to balance being critical with being supportive to help an actor improve their skills.  Most helpful to me is that even when I do well, Bill pushes me to do better.  When we discuss my performance we not only discuss what has worked, but we also discuss what has not worked.  He’s created an environment in his classes that encourages me to reach further, and reminded me that to be affective as an actor I must affect the viewer.  Taking Bill’s class has given me the skills and confidence I need to audition and work as an actor.  I know when I walk into the room to audition that I have done my job to prepare in part by working with Bill.

Here is the thing about Bill… He has helped me to trust myself which has allowed me to be myself. In other words he has helped me to stop “acting” the part and to start being the part. Having had a dozen different coaches in as many years to find a workshop like this is a rarity.

I am so grateful to have found Bill’s class.  He has undoubtedly changed me as a person and as an actor.  Bill is passionate and honest.  With his direct approach there’s no fluff; he just gives it to you straight and I respect that.  I believe it enables you to grow.

Rather than tell you what’s missing or direct you, he gets you to think and leads you to making discoveries on your own.  Discovering things for yourself allows you to own it and you’re then able to apply it on your own in auditions and on set which is invaluable.

Bill challenges you to push yourself beyond what you even think you’re capable of.  He gets you to explore deep within yourself and tap into parts of you that seem inaccessible; the good, the bad, and the ugly.  He opens you up to yourself and enables you to become a much more personal actor.

It’s so apparent that Bill truly cares about his actors and is genuinely invested in helping them achieve success.  Together you uncover your acting problems and work through them toward truthful and affecting storytelling.  I would and do recommend his class to any actor interested in taking their career to the next level…and the next, and the next.

When I first walked into Bill Howey’s acting studio I had no idea what to expect. I had taken a few years off from performing and I was anxious, excited, and a bit scared to be quite honest. From the moment I stepped on stage, I knew this wasn’t going to be a cake walk.  Bill is honest and challenging and never lets you stop working even when a scene goes well. You discover that you can always do more and by looking deep within yourself, you can find new and different ways to make the character truthful and affecting.  This class is not for actors looking to hear how good they are. This is a class for actors who want to improve their craft and aren’t afraid of criticism. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re already a working actor, one thing is for sure – you will grow in this class and it will make you a stronger, smarter and more bookable actor. Bill’s class has been instrumental in shaping my acting career and because of him I have gained a confidence in myself that I never knew I had.

Television and film sets constantly throw you curve balls. Things never go exactly how you’d want them to go and that is exactly what Bill prepares you for. He helps you be honest in a scene when you think you don’t know what you’re doing. Bill has taken me out of my head and put me in the situation I want to be in, which is on set.

Bill will never say you were good or bad. You either move people or you don’t, you are either real, or you retreat to a safe “actor” place. You decide what you do and how you do it and he’ll tell you if it worked and why it worked or didn’t. No directing! No bullshit!! No holding your hand and telling you you’re a good little actor. He’s not the best friend who lets you go on a date with something in your teeth because he doesn’t want to embarrass you. He tells you how it is so you can be your best and he keeps you on your toes because that’s what this industry does to us day in and day out.

Bill and Carla’s comments are honest, profound, at times painfully sharp and accurate all while building your confidence in being “you” in a scene. They don’t direct you, they open you’re eyes so that you can find what you need in order to grow. Bill and Carla Howey hold up a mirror to what you are doing and who you are and they help you to see what you can work on as well as all the positive things that you already have inside of you.

My best work to date, including an upcoming film I’ve been cast in, had all been the result of my studying with Bill and Carla. They’ve taken the raw talent that I’ve always known I had and opened the door for me to let it out.

Bill Howey’s class brought up my booking ratio for voice over work. Sure, his class is exclusively for on-camera scene study, but I discovered more emotion, more play, and more truth that I could bring to my auditions. His process, based on his book The Actor’s Menu, interrupted my capable auditioning habits and made them immediate and personal. Watching the other actor’s grow brought me to a better place, too. A warning, though: this is not a class where “all you do” is show up to get results – it’s a very active class, and I have to do the work weekly. I am challenged to explore the scenes, find more dangerous choices, and play with different takes on the same scene. It has increased my confidence and awakened even more life into my auditions. It’s a high quality return on investment, and I can feel the difference.

From Disney MGM Studios’ Great Movie Ride to Destination America’s Cheating Vegas Series, Roy’s voice has been heard by billions of ears. He has booked national voice over ad campaigns for TV, including Intel, Jeep, Dodge, Ford, and Nestle Wonka. He has voiced the killer in “Midnight Movie,” various voices in “The Beacon” and Universal’s “The Express” and “Van Helsing,” as well as the Jerry Bruckheimer / Disney feature “G-Force.” TV credits include American Horror Story, Battlefield, and others, many which have been recorded from his home studio in Hollywood.

He has recorded hundreds of promo spots for Los Angeles’ NPR station KCRW. Video Games include Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, X-COM, and Final Fantasy.

Video games – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

TV credits – Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Cheating Vegas

In 2006 he founded the Voice Over Work Out Lounge, a Hollywood-based workshop portal for voice actors.

I’ve studied and audited so many classes in Los Angeles. I was so tired of
hearing the same thing “you’re great, that’s perfect.”  I mean if that were
true I’d be booking left right and center…right?

I audited Bill’s not sure what to expect, what I found was more than I could
have wished for. I right away felt a shift in my work and in auditions.

With Bill and Carla’s help I’ve become a stronger artist. The thing I love
about Bill is his no nonsense work attitude. I don’t go up there and hear
“that was perfect just great!” but I am questioned “how did that feel? is
there another way to do it?” He doesn’t sit there and tell you how to act.

I mean what’s the point in that, so you can get on set and shit yourself
when they don’t tell you how to act. In Bill’s class you find the courage to
try things you maybe wouldn’t and just explore and try to see what changes
you can make in the other actor. Bill challenges you and breaks down the
walls that people put up to “protect themselves” which opens us up to really
living and feeling up there. I am so thankful for all of Bill and Carla’s
help. I am having the time of my life and watching my dreams unfold right in
front of me.
